We are excited to share our IYC winter catalog 2020 with you! It includes both in person and remote offerings. We will have Make Your Own Gift craft sessions available in both ways. We also have remote courses that run weekly Dec-Feb and some stand alone workshops. There may be other workshops added later to our Sign Up Here page.

Section One: Winter and Holiday Make Your Own Gifts

We are bringing back our make your own gifts event! Come create in a merry atmosphere! Offerings are both in person and remote. Each listing will specify the time and age level of the event. (Overall Ages 6 - 14 and adult)

 

In Person with Miss Julia: 

These in person offerings will be on Saturdays at The Groton Grange (80 Champney St, Groton, MA 01450). We hope to have both fun crafting and safety at our in person events. All participants (or their guardian) will be required to answer a Covid-19 Questionnaire before entering the building, will have their temperature taken (no touch), will be required to wear a mask at all times, and to follow the directions for seating by the staff for safety. Each participant will receive their own bag of materials and any tools that must be shared will be wiped in between.

 

P1: Felty Fun (gr. K-2) - Saturday, 12/5 (10-11:30am) 

In this fabric inspired holiday class we will make some fun holiday gifts perfect for family and friends! Children will make a felted ornament or tree, bookmark, and holiday gnome. The materials cost includes templates for ornaments, and all materials prepackaged for each student.  

Materials Cost $10 and Admission Fee $25: Total $35

 

P2: Felty Fun (gr. 3-5) - Saturday, 12/5 (12:30-2pm)

In this whimsical holiday craft class we will make a felted ornament, tree, and a sweet little gnome. Kids will trace, cut, and glue their own handcrafted gifts. This is a great opportunity to sign up with some friends, make some memories and enjoy making some sweet little gifts for all the special friends and family on your holiday list this year.  

Materials Cost $10 and Admission Fee $25: Total $35

 

P3: Felty Fun for Tweens - Saturday, 12/5 (3-4:30pm): Gr. 6-8

Grab your pals and join us for a fun afternoon making felted succulents, ornaments, and a felted holiday or flower inspired bookmark. This is a perfect opportunity to spend a safe socially distant afternoon with your friends and create handmade gifts for your special friends and family.  

Materials Cost $12 and Admission Fee $25: Total $37

 

P4: A Scentsy Holiday! (Gr.K-2) - Saturday, 12/12 (10-11:30am)

In this sweet smelling class we will make some bath scrubs, bath bombs, and a candle holder A perfect gift for a loved one that loves to be pampered. Children will enjoy making fun bath bombs, sugar cookie and grinch scrubs, and a Frank Lloyd Wright inspired votive.  

Materials Cost $15.00 and Admission Fee $25: Total $40

 

P5: A Scentsy Holiday! (Gr.3-5) - Saturday, 12/12 (12:30-2pm)

This class is geared for our older crafty friends. Grab your pals and join us in making some lovely scrubs, bath bombs, and scented hand warmers for your friends. Some light hand sewing will be involved. These yummy smelling gifts will be the perfect gift for those friends who like to pamper themselves.

P7: Holiday Modge Podge (Gr.K-2) - Sat. 12/19 (10-11:30am)

We have saved the best for last! In this last holiday class of 2020 we will make Christmas tree ornaments, a felted animal ornament(choose from owl, hedgehog, or fox), and 4 sharpie marker coasters. This class uses a variety of materials to make some new and unique gifts for the perfect someone in your life.

P9: Sharpie Holiday Crafts! (Gr.6-8) - Sat. 12/19 (3-4:30pm)

We have saved the best for last!  In this last holiday class of 2020 we will make permanent marker mugs, decorate and design make up bags, and create sharpie marker coasters. These are sure to please even the pickiest person on your holiday list this season. 

Materials Fee $15.00 and Admission Fee $25: Total $40

Remote with Miss Liz:  

These sessions will be held online via Zoom. We will have time to create, share what we are doing with each other, and listen to some merry music as we work on some fun crafts. Participants will need a spot set up where they can get a little messy in their art explorations. Part of the price of the remote gift workshops are the materials and tools that are yours to keep after the workshop. 

 

R1: Ornament Fun -  2 Tues. 12/8 + 12/15 (4-5pm): Ages 6-11

This gift workshop is spread between two Tuesdays for 1hr each. It includes projects that require a little extra drying time in between steps. The material fee includes enough to make 8 gifts including a colorful votive candle holder and five different types of festive fun ornaments. We will be getting a little messy with modge podge and acrylic paint so please have a spot ready to work safely and clothes you don’t mind if they get a little paint on them. One of our ornaments is a photo ornament and we will be in touch about the size with those who sign up. 

$20 Material fee and $28 Admission fee: $48 total

 

R2: Fleece Tied Pillows - Tues. 12/8 (5:20-6:20pm): Ages 10-14

Bring a friend and share your awesome knot tying skills as we make two fancy fringed fleece pillows. These pillows are easy once you get the hang of it and can be fun and relaxing to make at the same time. The material fee includes everything you will need to create two pillows. Participants will be able to pick their four pieces of fleece fabric from our range of designs and colors. (2 full 12x12 in. throw pillows)

R3: Tie Dye Sharpie Gifts - Friday, 12/11 (4-5pm): Ages 8-14 

Tie dyeing is quite a process and hard to do without getting messy. Here’s a way to get some beautiful colors and designs without the terrible mess. And it’s just as fun! The material kit includes a 24pk of Sharpie markers to keep, materials and tools used in the Sharpie dyeing process, 2 Shirts (Adult S-XL or Youth S-XL), 4 bandanas, and a tote bag. Participants will need use of a clothes dryer to set the ink after everything is air dried. We will show participants a variety of techniques and set them up to keep on creating! Participants should work in as open a space as possible for ventilation.     

$33 Material fee and $15 Admission fee: $48 total

 

R4: Sharpie Dishes - Friday, 12/11 (5:20-6:20pm): Ages 8-14 

Bring a friend and relax while doodling on dishes with Sharpie while listening to some merry music or sharing your creations as they form. Participants (or their guardian) will need access to an oven to set the sharpie. The material kit will include: a 24pk of sharpie markers to keep, 2 Mugs, 2 bowls, 2 small dipping sauce dishes, and the baking directions. We will make sure to cover the safety of which parts can have sharpie as well as plan some awesome patterns and designs to go on our pieces. ***Participants who also sign up for another remote sharpie workshop may ask for a reduced material fee of $14 instead of purchasing a second set of sharpies.)***

R5: Paper Tangle Balls - 2 Sat. 12/12 + 12/19 (11: 20-12:20pm): Age 11+

Like a little bit of a challenge? These sturdy 3D paper tangle ball ornaments take a little time to get the hang of but once you get going you will be amazed how easily you can make really amazing looking 3D paper ornaments. The material kit includes enough to create at least 16 ornaments in three different sizes and the tools to keep on creating on your own. On day one we will try out putting a pre-cut one together step-by-step and get a little messy painting our own texture paint paper. The Saturday after we will work through the 3D process together until we are all set to create them on our own. We will also share our work together as a group to see all the different ways we can create these ornaments! 

$18 material fee and $28 Admission fee: $46 total

 

R6: Tie Dye Tissue Paper - Sat.12/12 (10-11am): Age 6-14

Want the gifts you give this season to have some extra fun color? We are going to get a little bit messy with this one in a very fun way. Bring a friend and share your hand dyed tissue paper gift wrapping as we create it! We will try out some different dyeing techniques and create some of our own as we go. Participants will be working with liquid watercolor and will need a safe place to explore the materials and let them dry after dyeing. The materials kit includes enough to make around 25 sheets depending on how much ink is used for each sheet. Younger participants (6-7) may need an adult for help folding and mixing liquids.

$20 material fee and $15 Admission fee: $35 total

 

R7: Yarn-Wrap Ornaments - Tues. 12/15 (5:20-6:20pm): Age 8-14

Bring a friend and relax as we use yarn wrapping techniques to wrap stars, wreaths, and 3D winter hat ornaments. The material kit includes enough yarn and materials to create 2 wreaths, 2 stars, and 4 hats. We will go over each technique together so that you can continue to create all three on your own.

$10 Material fee and $15 Admission fee: $25 total

 

R8: Sharpie Ornaments - Friday, 12/18 (4-5pm): Ages 7-11

In this workshop we will be creating and decorating 5 types of ornaments with Sharpie markers. We will make some stained glass like ones and discover what sharpie does on different surfaces. The material kit includes a 24pk of Sharpie Markers to keep and enough materials to create 8 ornaments. ***Participants who also sign up for another remote sharpie workshop may ask for a reduced material fee of $6 instead of purchasing a second set of sharpies.)***

$15 base fee and $18 Material Fee: $33 total

R9: Tie Dye Sharpie Gifts 2 - Fri. 12/18 (5:20-6:20pm): Ages 8-14 

In this second round of tie dye sharpie we have a few types of new cloth gifts to work with and the go to shirts which are always fun to design! Get some beautiful colors and designs without the terrible mess of true tie dying and have just as much fun! The material kit includes a 24pk of Sharpie markers to keep, materials and tools used in the Sharpie dyeing process, 2 Shirts (Adult S-XL or Youth S-XL), a cotton scarf, a pillowcase, and 2 zipper pouches. Participants will need use of a clothes dryer to set the ink after everything is air dried. We will show participants a variety of techniques and set them up to keep on creating! Participants should work in as open a space as possible for ventilation. ***Participants who also sign up for another remote sharpie workshop may ask for a reduced material fee instead of buying a second set of sharpies or dyeing kit.)***

R10: Giant Snowflakes - Sat. 12/19 (10-11am): Age 6-11

We will read a snowflake story together to get ourselves going and then we will work step-by-step together to build great 3D paper giant snowflakes. The material kit includes enough materials to create and hang up 5 giant snowflakes.

R11: Memory Wire Bracelets - Tues. 12/22 (4-5pm): Ages 10-14 

Bring a friend and relax with some beading and jewelry making. Memory wire is a special type of tough wire that always goes back to its original shape. In this case, a bracelet. The material kit has enough to make between 7- 18 bracelets depending on the sizes you choose to cut. The material kit includes all of the tools you will need and can use in the future to continue making memory wire jewelry on your own. 

$27 Material fee and $15 Admission fee: $42 total

 

R12: Paper Penguins - Tues. 12/22 (5:20-6:20pm): Ages 6-11 

This is a fun step by step origami penguin that you can make again and again. There are enough materials to make several of different sizes. We will also be making cartoon-like penguins that will include a little easy weaving for decoration. Younger participants (6-7) may benefit having an adult nearby for a little extra help with folding.

Section Two: Remote Winter Courses Grades 2-5

Our new selection of winterlong courses. (December - February) We will meet once a week for 1 hour on Zoom. We often tuck some fun books into our classes to get started. Some of our student favorites have returned such as: Dragons! Students will need a safe place to get messy as they explore materials in different ways. All courses listed in this section are for grades 2-5 and may be split into two groups by age as necessary. 

 

C1: Masterpiece Mondays - 10 Classes: 12/7 - 2/22 (4-5pm)

We will be studying and creating in the Realism, Surrealism, and Abstract Cubism styles with artists like Pablo Picasso, John James Audubon, Duane Hanson, Salvador Dali, and René Magritte. We will have a chance for both some silly art and some serious art as we explore some of the art world’s top art pranksters as well as those who study the world so closely that they create artwork that looks too real. Our art kit will include: colored pencils 12pk, model magic clay, crayons 24pk, a watercolor set, and more. (no class on 1/18 or 2/15)

$24 material fee and $132 course fee: $156 total

 

C2: Animal Eye Tuesdays - 8 classes: 1/5 - 2/23 (4-5pm)

This course was inspired by the author Steve Jenkins and his book Eye to Eye: How Animals See The World. Jenkin’s books share both a good measure of animal science and art. In this course we will be drawing our own up close animal eyes step-by-step and learning some neat facts about them as we go. We will also be creating our own painted paper to create a large animal face collage.

$16 material fee and $106 course fee: $122 total

 

C3: Not Your Typical Drawing Wednesdays - 11 classes: 12/9-2/24 (4-5pm)

Bring a friend and come relax and have some sometimes silly fun with drawing. We will be trying some drawing exercises that get our pencils moving and help us plan things we want to create. This course will have us trying something new each week, a time set aside to work on longer drawings, and a good mix of silly and serious art. We will touch on a wide variety of subjects including animals, people, famous artists/styles, making things look 3D, mandalas, relaxing with some doodles, and much more! Our material kit includes: materials to make a quick refillable sketchbook, markers, silver sharpie, colored pencils 24pk, and crayons 24pk. (no class on 12/23) 

$18 material fee and $145 course fee: $163 total

C4: Stop Motion Movie Wednesdays - 11 classes: 12/9-2/24 (5:20-6:20pm) 

Stop action animation is the technique that artists use to make Claymation movies. It can also be used to make paper or other materials look like they are moving using only still pictures. We will explore many different ways to use materials for filming, build sets to film in, plan longer stories, and film, film, film. The filming is done with a free stop motion animation software that can be downloaded from the iStore or Google Play. Students will need access to a separate smartphone or tablet from their Zoom device that has a camera. (no class on 12/23)

$13 material fee and $145 course fee: $158 total

 

C5: Dragon Drawing Thursdays - 10 classes: 12/10 - 2/25 (4-5pm)  

Dragons, dragons, and more dragons! We will be drawing dragon eyes, step-by-step dragons, and close ups of different parts of the dragon. The main material for this course is colored pencils and we will learn about layering up colors to get some neat effects and visual textures. (no class 12/24 or 12/31) 

$8 Material fee and $132 course fee: $140 total

 

C6: Dragon Creation Thursdays - 10 classes: 12/10 - 2/25 (5:20-6:20pm) 

Dragons are back by popular demand! Based off of the Dragon Drawing course we will get warmed up with some drawing and then move on to some really cool materials. This time we will be adding oil pastels, watercolors, and model magic clay. We will be creating Dragon Eyes, full dragons (2D and 3D), and close up parts of the dragon as we have time. (no class 12/24 or 12/31)

$20 material fee and $132 course fee: $152 total

 

C7: Watercolor painting Fridays - 8 classes: 1/8 - 2/26 (4-5pm) 

This is an exploration of watercolor techniques, collage, and 3D paper art. We will get a little messy as we explore some fun techniques to create interesting textures and designs on paper using watercolors and a variety of tools to mix it up. We will also explore painting animals and subjects of choice as we go. And for a little extra fun we will discover the art of creating our own colorful 3D sculptures with our watery creations! The material kit includes: watercolor paper, a watercolor set, a brush set, crayons 24pk, and a kit of various materials to create different types of watercolor techniques.

$20 material fee and $104 course fee: $124 total

Section Three: One Day Remote Workshops

These art workshops will be held using Zoom and are on days with no school. They each have two 1 hour sections to give the work in the morning time to dry before the afternoon part of the activity. If more workshops become available they will be listed on our website. Students will need a safe place to get messy as they explore materials in different ways.

 

W1: Romare Bearden Self Portrait Collage 

Martin Luther King, Jr Day - 1/18 (10am and 3pm): Ages 7-11

Romare Bearden was an artist of many talents but we will focus on his work with collage. In this workshop we will take a quick look at the artist, his work, and then dive right into making art. During the first half of the workshop (10-11am) we will be getting a little messy as we design and explore making our own painted texture paper to collage with. In the afternoon (3-4pm), after the paint has had time to dry, we will begin building our own collages that tell a story about ourselves and our families.

$16 material fee and $28 admission fee: $44 total

 

W2: Jasper Johns Red, White, and Blue Collage 

Presidents Day - 2/15 (10am and 3pm): Ages 7-11

Jasper Johns was an American artist who was most known for his depictions of the United States flag. Johns was a leader in the art world during his time as he pushed at the boundaries of what art is. In this workshop we will take a quick look at the artist, his work, and then dive right into making art. We will get a little messy as we design and explore making our own red, white, and blue painted texture paper to collage with. The first half of the workshop will run at 10-11am and the second half will run at 3-4pm giving the paint some time to dry before we start cutting and creating our own abstract collages of the American flag.

$16 material fee and $28 admission fee: $44 total

Section Four: Tutoring and Private Art Lessons

These offerings are for scheduling by person and will be tailored to the needs of each student. Openings depend on the availability of the instructor. Orton Gillingham Tutoring with Miss Julia

1 on 1 Orton Gillingham tutoring available for your child grades K-5 with a certified Orton Gillingham instructor. Children will be assessed at their reading level. After assessment with instructor child will receive multisensory, sequential, and scaffolded instruction on a one on one basis.

$60 per hour


 

Private Art Class Request with Miss Liz

Want to study something we don’t have a course on? Want to spend more time learning certain materials? Need some guidance in putting together a portfolio of work? Miss Liz is a certified art educator and will work with K-12 students 1 on 1 to teach a requested subject or material. Adult requests and requests for a group activity are welcome too. 

$30 per hour + materials


 

Art for HomeSchool with Miss Liz

Teaching your kids at home? Looking for some guided art lessons that meet the national standards for arts education? Miss Liz is very flexible and will work with you to set up and teach an art curriculum for your kids. Due to current circumstances Miss Liz is only teaching remotely but is willing to discuss other options. We will set up an art kit that fits your curriculum.

$30 per hour + materials (add $10 for each additional child)
